How To Use Laptop As Monitor For PS3

Using your laptop as a monitor for your PS3 can be a great entertainment solution especially if you don’t have a TV. Laptops are great for portability, which means you can play your PS3 nearly anywhere in your house that has a wall outlet. So here is how to use laptop as monitor for PS3 in very simple steps.

When I was researching this topic, I did not find much information about how to actually connect these two devices together. Most people said it was outright impossible to do, however I did find a method that works and would like to share it with you in this article.

Here is a video which you can follow or you can follow the steps written below.

Step 1: Gather Required Items

You are going to need a few items for this method to work, because laptops do not have a HDMI input port. To get around this we will need:

  • Laptop
  • PS3
  • USB to USB cable
  • HDMI to HDMI cable
  • Video Capture Card
  • OBS Studio software

Step 2: Connect PS3 To Capture Card

After you have gathered the required items, start by plugging in your HDMI cable into the HDMI port at the back of your PS3.

Then plug the other end of the HDIM cable into the video capture card input port. Make sure you plug it into the port labelled input otherwise this won’t work.

Step 3: Connect Capture Card To Laptop

Now after the PS3 is connected to your capture card. Plug in the USB cable into the video capture card USB port and then the other end of the USB cable into your laptop’s USB port.

After you have plugged in the required cables, turn your PS3 on.

Step 4: Configure OBS Studio

For this connection to work, you will need OBS Studio which you can download from their website. It’s a free program which lets you do various video display techniques on your computer.

With your PS3 and Capture card plugged in, launch OBS Studio.

Add a new scene: click on the plus icon in the bottom left corner and name it what you want.

Add a video source: with a new scene activated, press the plus icon in the bottom left hand corner under the title video source.

Select video capture device: select the device from the list, and press ok. You should see your PS3 screen being displayed at this step. You can choose your display resolution in this window.

Adjust the window size correctly: now you will see your PS3 being displayed in OBS, you can configure the screen size by dragging the red bordered outline to fit your screen.

Step 5: Add Audio Device

Now that the video section has been setup correctly in OBS, begin adding a new Audio device.

Using the same method which you used to add a new video source, add a new audio source.

Click add new source: then select input audio device. Select USB video capture.

Step 6: Launch Fullscreen

Right click on the image being displayed in OBS then press window display. This will open fullscreen mode.

What If My Laptop Has a HDMI Input Port?

Some laptops have a HDMI input port however this is very rare. It should be labelled HDMI-in and you can find this on your laptops manual.

If your laptop has a HDMI in port then you can just use a dual header HDMI cable to directly connect your laptop to your PS3.

If it does not have a HDMI in port then you will have to buy a video capture card to use as an adapter and connect the video capture card via USB to your laptop.

A laptop is a great way to use an external monitor with a PS3 especially if you are trying to save money. Once you connect both devices and start them up you won’t be able to use your laptop until you disconnect the cord or turn off the PS3.

You will need to use a HDMI cord that has a HDMI header on both ends, this way you can plug the cord into both ports. One on your PS3 and one on your video card.

If you can’t do this then you can also use a HDMI to DVI cable. HDMI is better though because it has a higher frame rate and less latency. If you use something like a VGA cord it will be less quality and refresh rate.

If you need sound when connecting your PS3 to your laptop, configure the sound on OBS by selecting USB vide capture and doing it there.

After connecting via HDMI, adjust the resolution settings in OBS on your PS3 to match your laptop.

Conclusion

A lot of people want to know how to connect their PS3 to their laptop and now there is finally a way to do so. There is not much information online about this method so I’m glad to share this with you in this article. Keep in mind that the only way that I know how to make this work requires a video capture card.
